What does ‘organic’ on the label really mean? For decades we’ve had inexpensive consistent supplies of food. Now the food is shipped from thousands of miles, often from different continents (like China) and handled by a number of people. The more times anything’s handled the greater the cost and the more chance of contamination. Food quality and safety standards are not in place for most imported food and products. Canadian ‘organic’ food has a high quality reputation and people are reaching for these products. The lucrative financial opportunities of the organic food market have enticed box stores to sell ‘organic’ food. But is it really ‘organic’? Can Walmart organic match locally grown organic food? Are you confused by the terms ‘natural’, ‘organic’, ‘green’ and ‘additive free’? Perhaps your grandchildren and pressuring you to eat more ecologically produced foods. Can you trust the label? Is ‘organic’ food worth the extra money? Are you interested in buying food that nourishes your mind, body and spirit, doesn’t cost a fortune and tastes good? Is locally produced food ‘safer’?
